Choosing the thickness of your stone is very important. Depending on your project, you will most likely be choosing between a 2cm (3/4”) and a 3cm (1 ¼”). 2cm material is thinner, and therefore better for uses as a backsplash or vertical applications such as a fireplace or shower. Also, a 2cm material can be used as a countertop to give a sleek and modern design to a kitchen or bathroom. This design is especially popular in Europe. Although a 2cm serves an aesthetic purpose as a countertop, it is not as durable as a 3cm, and cannot bear the same amount of weight or support an overhang. Extra support will be required for a 2cm countertop, and depending on the style of the edge, a second strip may be required around the perimeter, and a seam will be visible. If the seam is not desirable, a 3cm material is probably a better option. 3cm is more durable, and can be used in places that receive more weight, such as stairs, floors, countertops and overhangs. Also, the thickness of the edge gives more options for edge finish styles.
Quartz countertops are man-made engineered stone formed by combining 90% ground quartz with resins, polymers and pigments. When these elements are fused together, they create a hard, durable surface, simulating a natural stone, like granite. Since quartz is man made, the colors and patterns can be controlled, eliminating natural imperfections that granite has. It is also easy to clean with a mild soap and does not need to be sealed. Although quartz is an excellent alternative to natural stone because of the consistency and variety, it is expensive to make, and is not heat resistant. Also, quartz slabs are made small, so a project may require more product to be purchased, and will also have seams where the slabs are put together.
Alternatively, granite is a natural stone that is mined in quarries all around the world. Some of the biggest quarries are in Brazil, China, Italy, Spain, Norway and India. Because granite is a natural stone, each individual slab is unique. It is also extremely durable, scratch resistant, heat resistant and stain resistant. Granite needs to be sealed at installation, and requires resealing maintenance to preserve the stone. Also, it is not recommended to use chemical cleaning products.
